With the springing up of Muslim Primary Schools, not only in Ijebu area but all over the then Western Nigeria such as Lagos, Abeokuta, Ibadan, Oyo, Ilesha etc, a big problem arose for primary school leavers to gain admission to secondary schools.
In the then Ijebu Province, the Ijebu Ode Grammar School, established since 1913, the Remo Secondary School, the Olu-Iwa College and Molusi College, Ijebu-Igbo, three years and one year ahead of Ijebu Muslim College respectively, could not contain the problem. The founding of a Muslim School thus became an urgent necessity.
In October, 1949 arrangement were made for candidates to obtain forms for the entrance examination, which was conducted in December 1949 at the Moslem Primary School, Ijebu-Ode and environs, Lagos, Ibadan, Abeokuta, Oyo and several other towns in the former Western Nigeria participated. The interview was rigorous as some potentially good Muslim candidates were dropped for being too tall for admission.
Officially, 48 students, but in reality 60, because of pressures, were admitted. The admission was based purely on merit, recording nine Christians on roll. While the majority of the students were Ijebu, some hailed from Lagos, Ibadan and Ondo which shows that, abinitio, the Ijebu Muslim |College had carved a niche for itself by shunning religious or ethnic discrimination, and this posture it has maintained till today.
On 27th January, 1950, the school resumed in hired building at Odo-Esa on the Epe Road, and an extract from the School Log Book read thus:-
“At 8am precisely today, the Ijebu Muslim College came into existence. Forty-eight young, eager and enthusiastic students enrolled as the foundation students of the new school. In the absence of Mr. T. O. Ogunkoya, the prospective time principal of the school at King’s College, Newcastle on Tyne, Mr. B. A. Sangowawa (A11775) a holder of the Higher Elementary Certificate, was appointed the Acting Principal, Mr. M. O. Abdul (A29530) was made Assistant. On this memorable day, many prominent members of the Muslim Community were in attendance. Prayers were offered and the Institution was wished a long and useful lease of life”. Sign, B. A. Sangowawa
